Eventually I decided that maintaining the rain barrel would make more work for me, with little gain. But the real reason is, that the existing plants (especially the trees) on the site are already accustomed to drinking the runoff from the gutters. Suddenly depriving the trees of this runoff could create yet new problems, so I decided not to go the rain barrel route.
