His town was telling him he couldn't have chickens, he sued and won, showing that the town was misinterpreting its own law. You can find numerous articles about his efforts in Wayne and elsewhere. He'd be happy to help anyone in a similar predicament in other towns. This post, by the way, tells a similar story. I was initially told by town staff that I couldn't have chickens in Princeton, but kept researching it and finally found the relevant staff member who said it was okay. I've never spoken to him, but got this info back in August from council member Bernie Miller: "Yes, we do have an Animal Control Officer. His name is Nate Barson. He’s located in the Health Dept. His email is nbarson@princetonnj.gov."

I've heard that it's harder to prevent odors if one has pigs. There were some goats living in a barn on the outskirts of Kingston some years back. Probably still there. They had a good vibe.
Steve Hiltnerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13814809440369173963noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30790016.post-86016972355324736122015-11-22T13:08:04.274-05:002015-11-22T13:08:04.274-05:00Any ideas about other types of farm animals such a...Any ideas about other types of farm animals such as goats or pigs? I've found guidelines online from other townships [including hopwell] regarding restrictions/limitations on livestock animals [stipulating that these animals should be kept 100ft from property lines and human inhabited structures, removal of waste, etc..], but none for Princeton boro/township. If you have any insight into this I'd appreciate it!kmhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17475040513297147149noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30790016.post-34709901383044995032013-02-26T11:32:53.976-05:002013-02-26T11:32:53.976-05:00I, too, heard the number two mentioned by clerk st...I, too, heard the number two mentioned by clerk staff, but could not find anything in the ordinances that correlates with that, and I decided that the animal control officer's word was the most authoritative, given it is his role to enforce. When I published this post, I balanced the desire to get information out to people with the concern that, if a lot of people call town staff asking about raising chickens, the staff will then be caught in the bind of explaining a policy that isn't spelled out in any actual ordinance. The best thing to do is to get one's neighbors' support, study up on chickens and the modest but consistent care they require, and if one really feels a need to double check with the town, contact the animal control officer directly.Steve Hiltnerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13814809440369173963noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30790016.post-60573330913894346322013-02-26T10:54:44.832-05:002013-02-26T10:54:44.832-05:00I intend to get a few chickens this spring; last y...I intend to get a few chickens this spring; last year I called the Twp clerk's office about it and they told me I could have two... but from what you say above I'm not sure where she got that number from. (I live on Leigh Ave.; maybe it is by neighborhood?) And thanks for the heads-up about the animal control officer as a resource. I wouldn't have thought of him.Robinnoreply@blogger.com
