I find for light exposures, if I rinse the skin with water within 20 minutes or so, I don't get a rash. Cortaid and similar products are good to apply to a rash just when it first appears, to nip it in the bud, but that may be the old school approach. My worst rash, as a kid, came after digging in the dirt in the winter.
