Mountain Lakes Dam Restoration Begins

The official groundbreaking ceremony for the dam restoration at Mountain Lakes took place today. The photo includes township staff, elected officials, members of Friends of Princeton Open Space and the Princeton Historic Preservation Commission, consulting engineers, and the contractor who has agreed to take on all the work.

We went for a walk on the Mt. Lakes property today, only to discover that our usual route is closed off. This was a surprise, as the path on the far side of the lake does not really get very close to the work area.

But I have a couple of questions: are both dams being re-worked, and will the lake(s) be dredged (deepened) before refilling?

  2. The upper dam will be restored first, with a hoped for completion date of the end of this year. The lower dam will also be restored and strengthened. Dredging is complete on the upper lake, and has begun on the lower lake. A map of open trails can be found by clicking on a link at http://www.princetontwp.org/mountain_lakes_preserve.html. Sorry about the inconvenience. There may be some more leeway on weekends, but they had to set some boundaries, and a lot of work has gone in to upgrading alternative trails.
