The Deceptive Woodpile

Most people, looking at this old wood pile, overgrown with vines and weeds, would think the wood worthless. But someone who knows wood sees the bark and can tell this is some of the finest firewood around. How could wood that looks to have sat on the ground for years have resisted rotting?

Removing invasive brush around the Veblen House has revealed many old fence posts still intact, likely made from black locust.
