Lesser Celandine Alert!

It's time for the annual call to action to prevent lesser celandine from taking over all of Princeton. Also called fig buttercup, it's a highly invasive nonnative plant that is spreading rapidly, yard to yard and into parks and nature preserves, where it degrades habitat for wildlife. It thrives on homeowners' indifference and inaction, so I've been doing what I can, urging town officials to defend our parks and preserves, urging homeowners to take action in their own yards, explaining that herbicides are not anti-nature if they are used selectively and medicinally. My letter to the Town Topics and other local publications starts like this:

Blooming in many people’s yards right now is a small yellow flower that, upon closer inspection, proves not to be a dandelion. Variously called lesser celandine or fig buttercup, its radical invasiveness triggers a predictable progression of emotions in the homeowner. Delight at its pretty flower soon turns to alarm as year by year it takes over the yard, spreading through flower beds, across lawns and into neighboring properties. What may start as a few scattered, harmless-seeming clumps quickly becomes the equivalent of a rash upon the landscape. Unlike the dandelion, lesser celandine also spreads into nature preserves. Poisonous to wildlife, it forms thick stands reminiscent of pavement. Over time, our nature preserves become less and less edible to the wildlife they were meant to support. Native diversity shifts towards non-native monoculture.

Below are some photos to help with identification, and here is a link that includes suggested means of stopping it from taking over your yard. Though the link says only to spray through early April, I'd suggest that spraying is helpful for as long as its leaves are green. Lesser celandine is a spring ephemeral, meaning that it comes up early, then dies back in June, going dormant until the next spring. Gardeners who like to dig up plants of this or that to give to friends should be aware that, if their yards have been invaded by lesser celandine, some of it may hitchhike in whatever plants they dig up later in the season to give away. They may unwittingly be giving a fellow gardener the beginnings of a major headache.

Lesser celandine is poisonous, and yet some websites declare it edible and offer recipes. Why the contradiction? Apparently, lesser celandine accumulates toxins later in the spring. The toxins break down during cooking or after drying. Still, one takes one's chances trying to eat it, and, alas, wildlife don't cook.

I've seen bees collecting pollen and nectar from the flowers, which is all fine and good, but this doesn't compensate for the inedibility of the leaves. The invasion of our lands by nonnative plants that wildlife don't eat essentially shrinks the acreage of functional habitat in Princeton, even though a great deal of open space has been preserved. Thus the need for management.

Given that some areas of Princeton have been overrun by lesser celandine, it's important to defend those areas that have not, by closely monitoring and spot spraying where the plant is just starting to move in. Invasions begin with just a few plants here and there. An absolute minimum of herbicide is needed to easily defend these areas. Lesser celandine can easily be distinguished from dandelion. Walk the grounds before the grass gets mowed in the spring and while the plant is blooming. For lawns, a product like Weed B Gone works. For other areas, a 2% solution of glyphosate does the trick. Since glyphosate can take a week to show visible effect on the plant, it's best to spray early in the spring so that there's time to see results and spray any areas missed. For those near wetlands, wetland-safe formulations of glyphosate are available, so Roundup is not the only option.

In terms of aesthetics, lesser celandine's dense, exclusionary growth does to the landscape what people badly afflicted with narcissism do to social situations. A woodland that once hosted a diversity of native wildflowers becomes, when overwhelmed by lesser celandine, one species' declaration of Me! Me! Me!

The closest lookalike in the lawn is the violet, whose leaves are darker, more curled, and more toothed along the edges.

Boneset Bugs and Beetles

I hope you like Boneset, which is a 4-5 foot high wildflower blooming now along streams and in my backyard in Princeton, because you're going to see a lot of it in this and accompanying posts, serving as a deceivingly bland white background for an astonishing variety of bugs, bees, wasps, flies, spiders, moths and butterflies. I started noticing so many different kinds that I decided to document and post as many as possible on this blog.

What has boneset got that all those other, more brightly colored flowers lack? Those others may draw a random bee or two, but boneset's platters of shallow, honey-scented flowers serve as a mecca for a book full of insects. One day I'll crack that book and find out what they all are. For now, some photos.

With this first of several posts documenting the variety of life attracted to a boneset, the count for kinds of bug or beetle-like insects stands at nine.

Where Have All the Pollinators Gone? -- Summer, 2021

Wherein is discussed the season's paucity of pollinators, the curiously prolific presence of hornets, and possible causes thereof. 

With the coming and the going of this year's autumnal equinox, it's time to look back on a long summer and ask, "What happened?" Or, more precisely, "What happened to the happening that didn't happen?" 

There's lots of talk about how insects are in decline and that we need to plant more wildflowers to support them. A local ecologist and avid birder, David Wilcove, co-wrote an oped in the Washington Post about the danger posed by insect decline, and the need to better monitor populations, as is done with birds.

This year, there was a steep decline in pollinator numbers in Princeton. Each year I grow a banquet of wildflowers in my backyard for all manner of insects to feast upon. In past years, they'd come from near and far, their numbers building through summer, climaxing in late August in a buzzfest on the boneset. Though mountain mint is another great draw for insects, in my yard it was boneset in particular, clustered here and there in the garden, that in past years drew the multitudinous shapes and sizes of the insect world. Its broad disks of tiny white flowers seemed like a Serengeti in miniature, an open plain perched conveniently four feet above the ground, teaming with life. It was a chance to see the insects close up, they being so focused on the nectar or each other that they took little notice of me.

Then, two years ago, and again last year, the numbers of insects were down--still numerous but not enough to stir that late-summer's jazzy feeling of frenzied activity. 

2021: An astonishing diminishment

And this year? This year, boosted by the rains, the wildflowers grew to fabulous size. Broad arrays of blooms mounted on multiple stems stood at the ready. In early summer, while periodical cicadas held center stage, the numbers and variety of pollinators were building nicely. 



But then, as the wildflower meadow's heavy hitters--the cutleaf coneflowers, Joe-Pye-Weeds, bonesets and wild sennas--unveiled their fabulous blooms for the mid-summer festival of nectar, the insects were no-shows. Abundant flowers had few pollinators, and sometimes none at all. Diversity dwindled to some tiny somethings, a few bumblebees and even fewer honey bees. 

Sifting through possible causes for the decline

Possible causes for the dramatic decline have been offered: extreme heat, more homeowners fogging their yards for mosquitoes, expanding monocultures of lawn and invasive species. Or perhaps the climate-changed winters have messed with insect dormancy.

The rains of July, the rains of August

What I have particularly noticed over the past three years, however, is the increase in rain during the summer. Rutgers precipitation data for NJ show increased precipitation particularly over the past two years in July and August. Not only has there been more rain, but the intensity of the rain has increased. The sound on the roof is different--one can hear and even feel the extraordinary density and weight of the rain. The deep trauma of Hurricane Ida was the climax among multiple intense storms before and after. The ground and foliage are literally getting beaten up by these deluges. Insects try to hide during storms. Some live in the ground. The harder the rain, the fewer places to hide, and the more likelihood that a ground nest will be flooded out. All that sustained moisture could increase the risk of disease, which an entomologist friend says can play a big role in bee numbers. 

Some of us noticed other changes as well. Gladly, the numbers of odorous house ants invading our kitchen were down from previous years. Mosquitoes in our area seemed relatively rare in early summer, though numbers surged later in the season--tiny ones, probably asian tiger mosquitoes. 

A proliferation of hornets

What was most striking and very strange was a proliferation of hornets. Last year, I seldom saw them, but oftentimes this summer, approaching a patch of flowers, the first thing that would catch my eye was not pollinators but the hornets that can prey upon them. 

We have two kinds of insects called hornets. One is the European hornet, which looks to me like a stocky bee--black markings with a particularly thick yellow abdomen.

The other is the bald-faced hornet, a native insect with black markings and a whitish face. 

Both are hard to photograph because they don't land, but instead keep cruising around the flowers. Periodically they may bump into a bee that was minding its own business on a flower. The contact lasts a split second, then the hornet flies on. The purpose of this brief harassment is not clear. 

Here's a bald-faced hornet in adult and larval form, found on a fragrant of nest someone left at the curb. Both kinds of hornets live in nests that are in or hang from trees. The paper they make, by the way, is beautiful when looked at close up.

Why the proliferation of hornets, cruising relentlessly among the flowers with a sense of urgency but no clear goal? Maybe they just seemed more numerous due to the lack of other insects to catch one's attention. Or maybe the fact that they live in elevated, waterproof nests allowed them to better survive the intense storms. 

The seeds of change planted over centuries

In any case, this summer was not the lively pollinator party I was used to playing host to, both in my backyard and at our Botanical Art Garden (the "Barden") in Herrontown Woods. One interpretation is that the carbon dioxide we've been scattering to the winds is now coming home to roost, in the form of weird winters and intensified storms. In Princeton, basements flooded that had never flooded before. It's not a stretch to hypothesize that many bees also find themselves newly vulnerable to the merciless power of the rain. And then, on the sunny days when pollinators can make it to the flowers, there's the haunting background of patrolling hornets.

In a docile wasp, some small comfort

As students returned to the university, I remembered helping my daughter move in to Whitman College two years ago. In the courtyard, I had noticed thousands of wasps cruising just above the grass. It was a mating dance, of no danger to the parents and students passing by, of blue-winged wasps. I had recognized their distinctive orange abdomen from those that would frequent the flowers in my backyard, a mile away from campus. 

This year, I had seen only one in my yard, and wondered whether their improbable annual ritual was still playing out at Whitman College. 

What I found on Sept 2nd were perhaps a hundred wasps flying in their usual criss-cross manner a foot above the lawn. Some seemed fatigued by it all, and would abandon their flight to sit among the grass blades for awhile. Though their numbers were down from the thousands I'd seen two years prior, I was glad to see any at all. And a student sitting in a lawn chair, scrutinizing his computer, told me there had been many more ten days prior when students first began moving in. 

It would be nice to think that the paucity of pollinators I observed this summer was an isolated affair. But others around New Jersey have made similar reports. An entomologist friend who lives in Oregon told me that he's seen "a very significant decline in pollinators" this year, probably due to drought, though he also said that each species can vary in numbers year to year. 

An ark is built of something more than flowers

We take so much for granted in our lives. When something breaks, that's when one has to study up and figure out how it works, what went wrong, and how possibly to fix it. The insect world has been taken for granted since forever. Annual bird surveys benefit from a community of avid birders, but citizen scientists who are up to speed on the mind-boggling diversity of insects are fewer to come by. We thought we could just plant some flowers and the insects would come, but the needs appear to be far deeper than that.

It's bee-bopping time, as barberry bushes present their trigger-happy stamens to the insect world. Find something narrow, like a blade of grass, and tickle the base of the stamen to see how the flower delivers a dollop of pollen with a tiny wallop to any visiting pollinator.

Backyard Biodiversity at 7pm

If you want biodiversity in your backyard, plant a Eupatorium. This one happens to be boneset, perhaps the most magical of all Eupatoriums in its allure for pollinators. The progression in my backyard begins with JoePyeWeed, shifts to boneset and mistflower, then finishes off with Late-Flowering Thoroughwort. All of these have tiny, shallow flowers that appeal to an unusual range of insects.



Boneset rewards anyone willing to stand still long enough to watch at close range the comings and goings at this five foot high fast food joint. There's the usual honey bees and bumblebees hanging out, but then what are all these other creatures in wild outfits? A wasp with blue iridescent wings and brown abdomen. Another wasp with an improbably thin waist. And then another bug of mysterious identity, a couple kinds of moths, and a ladybug cruising up and down the stems in search of a meal.



I have no names for most of these, only a sense of wonder at all the varied life that meets for dinner on a boneset, at 7pm on a Sunday evening.

One Good Garden Begets Another


A vision for attractive, low-maintenance curbside landscaping appears to be spreading across the municipal swimming pool's parking lot. The combination of mulch and perennials means little upkeep needed beyond an occasional watering.

The default lawnscaping still found elsewhere in the parking lot requires mowing, watering, and broadleaf herbicide, which I was told by a former rec dept director was necessary to keep white clover from growing. The clover flowers attract bees, which don't go well with barefoot swimmers.

The new garden looks to be the offspring of other gardens nearby. There's the Dogwood Garden Club's garden, here on the right, and Vikki's plantings in front of the parks and rec offices in the distance.

Vikki, a rec dept. employee, had already expanded her gardens beyond the walls and down towards the police department's parking lot. It's in the nature of well-tended gardens to expand, since the perennials benefit from occasional division, insuring lots of new plants that need new space to grow in.

At the other end of the municipal parking lot, another garden prospers, at Community Park Elementary. There's the edible portion in the front, and a more prairie-like garden in the back courtyard. Here, too, is a similar story of one garden inspiring another, until gardens now grow at all Princeton public schools.

A more detailed story of this greening of schoolyards--with Karla Cook, Dorothy Mullen, science teachers John Emmons and Martha Friend, and many other parents, students and teachers playing a role--can be found at the Princeton School Gardens website.

It may even explain what these cups signify--perhaps something to do with celebrating ten years of gardening at CP school.

Add to this the community gardens around the corner on John Street, overseen by the rec department, and one has a central example of a public gardening renaissance in Princeton.

Trouble For Princeton's Trees


To inoculate you for the news carried in this post, I'd like to point out that wishful thinking is not the same as hope. In fact, to the extent that it postpones action, wishful thinking can be thought of as the enemy of hope. Bad news is much more easily accepted if we feel confident in our capacity to work together as a community to respond.

Princeton has a real challenge ahead if it is to keep its protective canopy of trees in coming decades. There are the losses in recent years due to storms like Hurricane Sandy, the ongoing attrition as some pin oaks and red oaks succumb to Bacterial Leaf Scorch, and then there is the gathering storm just to our west of the emerald ash borer. Through a recently completed tree inventory, Princeton can now look at the numbers, and they don't add up--the number of trees likely to be lost dwarfs the number of trees being planted.

Doing the Math

Here are the numbers, rounded off for easier math, as presented by Bob Wells of Morris Arboretum, who directed the inventory and integrated it with an earlier survey of borough trees done by Jim Consolloy. These are only the trees growing in the street right of ways. Trees in parks, preserves, and on private property are not included. Of Princeton's 19,000 street trees, 3000 are in poor condition--unlikely to live beyond the next five years. Another 6000 are in fair condition, with an estimated life expectancy of 5-15 years. Even those trees in good condition are threatened by a growing collection of invading insects and diseases, along with the increasing weather extremes associated with climate change. For instance, some of Princeton's 1400 pin oaks and red oaks will continue to be lost to Bacterial Leaf Scorch.

Compare those numbers with the current replacement rate. Princeton purchases and plants about 60 trees each year along the streets. Its tree crew takes down about 250 trees each year in parks and along streets. The numbers offered up by the tree inventory estimates the annual loss of street trees to be a minimum of 600. By this math, we will be losing ten trees for every one being planted. And this doesn't even take into account the imminent arrival of the Emerald Ash Borer.

Emerald = Less Green

Perhaps most worrisome is the looming threat to Princeton's most common tree, the ash. We can expect to lose most of our 2200 white and green ash trees along the streets in coming years, plus the tens of thousands in our woodlands. The culprit is the emerald ash borer (EAB), an insect that hitch-hiked to southeastern Michigan in wooden packing crates from China, then proliferated to kill 50,000 trees before anyone knew what it was. Since its identification in 2002, EAB has been radiating out across the midwest, killing tens of millions of trees, including a relentless spread eastward through Ohio and Pennsylvania to the border with New Jersey. A map at this link shows New Jersey essentially surrounded by infestations in bordering states.

As chance would have it, the original EAB infestation occurred just north of Ann Arbor, MI, where I used to live. The city of 100,000 had to spend $5.8 million removing 10,000 trees. Interestingly, ash continue to sprout in the woodlands there, and can grow to 6 inch diameter, but the chances of their growing to maturity are slim.

Princeton has dealt with threats to trees in the past. A bacterium called Bacillus thuringiensis (BT) has been used to reduce the impact of gypsy moths. According to Greg O'Neil, Princeton's arborist, the wooly adelgid's attack on our eastern hemlocks was slowed down by pesticide, after which the pest appears to have "cycled through", allowing many hemlocks to survive.

There is, however, no known control for emerald ash borer other than individually treating each tree, and even then the results are mixed. As an added complication, Imidacloprid, the most frequently mentioned systemic insecticide for protecting ash trees, may be contributing to the decline of honey bees.

What To Do

The sooner we acknowledge the depths of the challenge we face, the more proactive we can be, and the better the prognosis for Princeton's tree canopy. There are a number of actions that can be taken. Treatment for ash trees that are particularly cherished is best undertaken before the emerald ash borer arrives. To better spread the work of removal over a number of years, some of the younger or less healthy ash trees can be taken down and replaced with another species before the invasion hits. The municipality should at least be planning for the extra staff needs and the seven figure expense coming down the pike.

The big question is how to replace so many trees with a limited budget. The more gaps in the street canopy, the more pavement is exposed to the sun, which through the "heat island effect" causes the town to be hotter than it need be in the summer. At $200 a piece, new trees aren't cheap, and then there's the planting and followup care to insure they survive.

One approach I'm exploring, as a member of the Princeton Shade Tree Commission, is transplanting "volunteer" trees that sprout in people's yards. Some species are more appropriate than others, and determining where to plant them along the street requires some guidance. Perhaps we can come up with a guide, and motivated neighbors could take initiative in their neighborhood to identify gaps and work with willing homeowners to get trees planted in an optimal place and manner along the street. Given the infinite reasons that can be summoned for inaction, such an approach will only work if people see how their own needs can be met by participating in the collective endeavor of shading our streets.


For me, the hope lies in the growth force and the natural affinity people have for trees. It's remarkable how quickly the red oak in this photo, which sprouted on its own in my next door neighbor's yard not that many years ago, has grown large enough to cast much-needed shade on our driveway.

Neighbors a couple doors down have transplanted volunteer trees to key spots in their yard--to shade the house, provide habitat for birds, and provide buffer from the street. After just a few years, they are robust young trees--a white oak, pin oak, American elm and tulip poplar. Another friend is growing a pawpaw and a fig in a sunny spot in their backyard--going for food rather than shade.

Each kind of tree has its strengths and potential drawbacks and vulnerabilities, but after years in which Princeton's landscape was dominated by mature trees, it's refreshing to see young ones coming on the scene, filling the voids, reaching for the sun.

Terhune Orchards' "Turning 40" Tour


As I hurried to catch the start of a 40th anniversary tour of Terhune Orchards, surprised that I was actually on time, I passed a major showoff in the chicken coop. The white peacock was trying to impress the chickens, who were clearly more interested in the food.

As with the chickens, it's the food that's always impressed me about Terhune Orchards. No big show, just consistently great when it comes to taste and quality. No fancy facade, just keepin' it real. Cider, donuts, apples that just keep coming, and some 35 other crops to make the short drive out of town worthwhile. There's also the integration of business and community spirit, of which the chickens may not have paid much notice.


On this farm, utility is mixed with charm. History sits comfortably mingled with the modern in a multi-generational assemblage of "stuff".

Speaking of connections with the past, it turns out that the Terhunes, from whom the Mounts bought the farm 40 years ago, shared some common ancestors with Gary Mount, who had grown up on a farm in West Windsor next to Route 1. The Mounts learned of this only many years after the purchase.


I made it to the big barn in time for introductory remarks by three generations of Mounts. Two daughters and their families have returned to continue the tradition.

Solar panels on the big red barn, constructed by Amish woodworkers using the traditional oak pins instead of nails, supply 40% of the energy required to run the barn's climate control machinery.

Apples are stored in two different chambers. One is kept cold and humid, and keeps the apples fresh for several months. The other is for longterm storage. There, behind lock and key, the process of ripening and decay is stymied by dropping the oxygen level from 20% down to 2%. The oxygen is pushed out by injecting additional nitrogen into the room. Each month in the winter and spring, the door is opened, oxygen is allowed in so that workers can breathe, and a month's worth of apples are moved to the other chamber.


Outside, honey bees were pollinating the cherry blossoms. During the two weeks just before harvest, plastic is drawn over the hoops to protect the cherries from rain (and supposedly from the birds as well). Otherwise, the cherries will absorb the moisture and crack.

Apple trees are now planted much closer together than in the tradition configuration seen in the parking lot. Their trunks are so weak that they need to be staked, lest they fall over with a heavy load of apples, but the harvest is double what it used to be.

Pick your own asparagus. Ruth Stout, in her book from the 1940s called "How To Have a Green Thumb Without An Aching Back", described how gardeners used to dig a two foot deep trench to plant their asparagus in, then backfilled slowly as the asparagus grew. All that work, Stout contended, was unnecessary. Simply plant the asparagus at ground level. I didn't ask Gary Mount what his planting method is, but they make farming look so easy, I'm sure they don't seek out unnecessary work.

Some years back, one of their employees took an interest in greenhouse gardening, and the Mounts went with it. There are now three greenhouses, with one separated from the other tow, devoted to organic methods. Cloth is pulled over the space in winter, to provide at least a little insulation for this fuel-intensive space.

We got a tour of the bakery. It's surprisingly small, considering the output, not much larger than some expansive kitchens I've seen in private homes around town. The cider operation, too, is surprisingly compact. Apples that have slight blemishes or are too small for sale as apples are used to make cider. There's some thought put into blending different kinds. I asked why Terhune Orchard cider is so much richer in taste than other brands, and learned that most cider makers don't grow their own apples, but are supplied with small apples without much flavor. Stayman apples, not often used elsewhere, are also a particularly rich component of Terhune cider.

That accordion-like structure in the background, reminiscent of an Argentine bandoneon, is the cider press. I didn't ask whether the press plays tangoes while squeezing. The cider's then flash pasteurized, stored in big stainless steel containers designed for dairy operations, then jugged. The pulp is spread on fields using a manure spreader.

That was the tour. Gary headed out on a tractor to plant some corn. I headed back to town with donuts and asparagus, to catch some of Communiversity. Happy anniversary, Terhune Orchards! May there be 40 more.
